9月3日から6日まで東京・国立代々木競技場 第一体育館で開催された「SJJIFワールド2026」は、世界54カ国から約6500人が参加し、アジアで開催された柔術大会として過去最大規模となった。
2024年の初開催から3年連続で日本で開催され、アジアにおける柔術の競技人口、そして競技レベルの飛躍的な成長を示す大会となった。
大会を終えたSJJIF会長ジョアオ・シウバは、その成功を振り返るとともに、日本開催に至った経緯と3年間の成果を語った。
そして2027年の舞台はブラジルへ。
柔術がスポーツとして誕生してから60年という節目に、SJJIFは1万人規模の大会を目標に掲げる。
日本大会の成功を次なるステージへとつなげるジョアオ会長に、東京大会の総括と来るブラジル大会への展望を聞いた。
──SJJIFワールド、お疲れ様でした。アジア最大規模となった大会を終えた今、どんな気持ちですか？
ジョアオ：とても嬉しいです。今回のSJJIFワールドは大成功だったと感じています。私たちの使命は、世界中から選手や関係者を集めることでした。そして、それを実現することができました。
今回は6500人の選手、54カ国が参加し、アジアでこれまで開催された大会として最大規模となりました。ここ日本で3年間にわたって大会を開催してきましたが、その間にアジアの柔術は本当に大きく成長したと思います。今年の選手たちを見ても、そのレベルの高さは非常に大きなものになっています。
ですから、日本で素晴らしい仕事をしてくれたすべての皆さんを、とても誇りに思っています。
──2024年に日本で初めてのSJJIFワールドを開催することを決めた理由を教えてください。
ジョアオ：2022年の連盟総会で、今後はSJJIFワールドを世界各地で開催していこうという方針を決めました。そして2023年にはブラジルでSJJIFワールドを開催し、「次はどこで開催するのか？」という話になりました。SJJIFには74の各国連盟と、6つの大陸連盟があります。その中で、ASJJF＝アジア連盟のエジソン（カゴハラ）が非常に素晴らしい仕事をしていることに気づきました。
「彼なら任せられる」と考え、そこで日本に来ることになったのです。そして最初の日本大会を開催したところ、それが大成功に終わりました。すると彼が「自分にはもっと良い大会ができる。もう一度やりましょう」と言ったんです。私はちょっと迷いつつも「あなたがそう思うなら、やりましょう」と答えました。
その後、次の開催地へ移ろうとしていたところ、彼が「いや、もう一度やらせてほしい。3回目が必要だ。東京で、もっと大きな大会を開催できる」と言ったんです。そこで3回目の日本開催を決めました。そして実際に過去最大規模の素晴らしい大会になりました。間違いなく、正しい選択だったと思います。
──来年はブラジルで大会を開催します。開催地としてなぜブラジルを選んだのでしょうか？
ジョアオ：ブラジルでのSJJIFワールド開催は私たちにとって非常に戦略的な意味があります。2027年は、ブラジリアン柔術がスポーツとして誕生してから60年という節目の年だからです。
1967年、マスターたちによって最初の柔術連盟が設立されました。それによって柔術は単なる格闘技やストリートでの護身術ではなく、ルールが制定され競技化されて「スポーツ」として発展していくことになりました。
だからこそ私たちは「この60周年を祝おう。世界中のみんなでブラジルに集まり、スポーツ柔術60周年を祝おう」と考えたのです。それがブラジルで開催する理由です。まさに、次の開催地としてふさわしい場所だと思っています。
──今年は6500人でアジア最大の大会となりました。ブラジルで開催される来年の大会はどうなると思いますか？
ジョアオ：ブラジル大会では、とにかく大きなショーを作ることが目標です。私たちのビジョンは、1万人の選手にできるだけ近づくことです。
もちろん、それは非常に大きな挑戦になります。しかし、世界中からブラジルに集まってくれる選手たちのことを考えれば、実現できると信じています。特に中米には、ビザの問題で他国へ行くことが難しい選手たちがいます。
ブラジルは、そうした選手たちにとって比較的訪れやすい場所です。さらに、ブラジル国内には非常に多くの選手がいます。ですから、非常に大きな大会を開催できると考えています。
──ブラジルは大きな国ですが、開催地はリオデジャネイロ、サンパウロ、それとも別の都市になるのでしょうか？
ジョアオ：まだ検討している段階です。先ほども言ったように、ブラジルでは非常に大きな大会を開催したいと考えています。そのため、まずはこれだけの規模の大会を収容できる会場がどこなのかを検討しています。
今回、日本では国内最大級のスポーツ会場であり、最先端の設備を備えた会場（代々木第一体育館）で開催することができました。ブラジルでも同じように、「ブラジルに来て、この大会の一員になれて本当に良かった」と、参加する人たちが誇りに思えるような大会にしたいと考えています。
──では最後に今大会に参加してくれた方々へメッセージをお願いします。
ジョアオ：まず、SJJIF、ASJJF、そしてこの組織に加盟するすべての連盟をサポートしてくれた皆さんに感謝したいです。このSJJIFワールドの一員になってくれて、本当にありがとうございました。皆さんは素晴らしい仕事をしてくれました。
そして何より、この会場に来て実際に試合をし、私たちのために素晴らしい大会を作ってくれた一人ひとりの選手に感謝しています。
2027年、ブラジルで皆さんにお会いし、一緒に60周年を祝えることを楽しみにしています。そして、私たちはまたいつか日本に戻ってきて、今回以上に大きなSJJJFワールドを開催したいと思っています。ありがとうございました。
── How do you feel now that after the big event?
Joao: I feel very good. I feel that the Worlds was a huge success. Our mission was to bring people from all over the world, and we did. We had the biggest tournament ever held in Asia with 6,500 competitors, 54 nations participating. So, we did this for 3 years in here. I believe that Jiu-Jitsu in Asia grew tremendously. You can see the athletes, the level of competition is huge this year. So, I’m very happy and proud of everyone that did an amazing job here in Japan.
── Why did you decide to hold the tournament in Japan in 2024?
Joao:So, the idea, we had the voting at the General Assembly in 2022 that we should start making the Worlds go around. And then in 2023, I’m sorry, we had the Worlds in Brazil. And we said, “Okay, where are we going to go next?” And, you know, like we saw out of all of our federations—we have 74 national federations and we had all 6 continental federations—out of all of them, we saw, you know, Edson with Asian Federation was doing an amazing job. We said, “He’s the right one to do so,” and we came here.
And after he hosted the first one, which was a huge success, he was like, “You know what? I feel I can do better. Let’s do it again.” And I was like, “Okay, if you feel so, let’s go.” And then we were going to move, and he’s like, “No, no, no, I need a third one. I can do it in Tokyo. We can do it big.” And I was like, “Okay, let’s do the third time.” And yes, it was amazing. No questions, we did the right choice.
── Next year, you will hold the tournament in Brazil. Why did you choose Brazil?
Joao: Brazil is a very strategic thing for us because it’s 60 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a sport. So, in 1967, the Masters of Art founded the first federation of Jiu-Jitsu, where it became not only a fighting style or street self-defense, but a sport. So for us, it’s like, “Hey, let’s celebrate it! Let’s go together and celebrate the whole world in Brazil, 60 years of sport Jiu-Jitsu.” And that’s what we do, so, you know, it’s the right thing to do.
── This year, 6,500. Next year, how do you think?
Joao: Our goal for Brazil is to put a huge show. You know, like our vision is to get as close as we can to 10,000 competitors, right? Like it’s a big feat, right? But we believe with all the competitors that we have around the world coming to Brazil, we believe all the Central America that sometimes can’t get the visas to go to other countries, Brazil is an open place for them to go, plus all the Brazilian athletes. So, we believe we can hold a huge tournament.
── Brazil is a big country. What… do you decide Rio de Janeiro, or São Paulo, or other city?
Joao: We’re still figuring that out. We’re trying, like I said, we’re trying to put a huge show in Brazil. So, we’re trying to figure out what venue can accommodate something like this, right? We came out of Japan in the biggest venue, you know, sport venue in Japan, state of the art. So, we want to, you know, do something like that in Brazil where people can be proud of coming to Brazil and be part of the event.
── Please give us a message to Japanese BJJ competitors.
Joao: First of all, thank you all for supporting the SJJIF, the Asian Federation, and all the federations within the organization. Thank you for being part of this world. You guys did an amazing job. And most importantly, you know, thank you for each one of you guys that came to this door competing and did a show for us. We’re looking forward to seeing you in Brazil in 2027, celebrating with us. And we hope to soon come back to Japan and have an even bigger Worlds. Thank you.
